It is an oxide mineral belonging to the spinel family. The chromium oxide content of chrome ore sand in nature varies. Low content chromium ore sand is used in metallurgical and chemical industries. High quality chromite sand with a chromium oxide content of 46 or above can be used as refractory and casting materials. Chromite sand is used in the metal casting industry due to its high thermal conductivity, providing cooling effects. Chromite sand has low thermal expansion. It helps to eliminate expansion defects. Chrome ore sand has a smooth black appearance and greater resistance to metal penetration than zircon. It has a higher acid demand than other sands, which means that more acid catalysts are needed when using furan resin. Chromite sand is commonly used in steel castings to provide cooling.
Chromium iron ore sand is used as molding sand, surface sand, and core sand for large castings in the casting industry. Chrome ore sand is ground into fine powder and used as a green or brown coloring material in ceramic and glass bottle production, as well as a wear-resistant additive in brake pads.
